What are Railway Exams?

Railway recruitment examinations are competitive examinations conducted mainly through Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) for different technical, non-technical, operational and Level-1 posts in Indian Railways. Eligibility, syllabus, age, medical standards and selection stages vary according to the post and recruitment notification.

RRB NTPC

Recruitment for Non-Technical Popular Categories such as Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk and graduate-level NTPC posts, as notified.

RRB Group D / Level-1

Recruitment for Level-1 posts in Indian Railways. Eligibility and posts are determined by the applicable Centralised Employment Notice.

Assistant Loco Pilot recruitment. Technical qualification and prescribed medical standards are important for this post.

Number System, BODMAS, decimals, fractions, LCM, HCF, ratio, percentage, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, algebra, geometry, mensuration and related topics.

Analogies, series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, Venn diagrams, classification, directions, analytical reasoning and other applicable topics.

General Science

Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences at the level prescribed for the particular examination. RRB syllabi commonly refer to school-level science for relevant posts.

General Awareness

Current affairs, science and technology, sports, culture, personalities, economics, politics and other important national and international developments.

Computer Awareness

Computer basics, hardware, software, operating systems, internet and related topics where included in the applicable examination.

Technical Subjects

Technical questions are included in examinations such as ALP, Technician and JE according to the relevant trade, discipline and notification.

Railway Exam Eligibility

Educational Qualification

Educational qualification depends on the post. Railway recruitment may include 10th-pass, ITI, 12th, graduation, diploma and engineering qualifications.

Age Limit

Age limits vary by recruitment and post. Category-wise age relaxation is provided according to the applicable rules and notification.

Nationality

Nationality and other citizenship conditions are specified in the relevant recruitment notification.

Medical Standards

Several railway posts have specific medical standards. Candidates should check the medical requirement of the post before applying, especially for safety-related and technical posts.

NCERT for Railway Exams

NCERT is not compulsory for every railway examination. It is particularly useful for building basic Science concepts and can also help with foundational General Knowledge. For technical posts, candidates should give priority to the qualification-specific technical syllabus and previous-year questions.

Important Railway Exam Information

Negative Marking

Negative marking is not identical for every railway recruitment. For example, the RRB ALP CEN 01/2024 specifies 1/3 mark deduction for a wrong answer in CBT-1 and CBT-2. Always check the current CEN.

Negative Marking

हर railway recruitment में negative marking एक जैसी नहीं होती। उदाहरण के लिए RRB ALP CEN 01/2024 में CBT-1 और CBT-2 में गलत उत्तर पर 1/3 mark की deduction निर्धारित थी। Current CEN जरूर देखें।
