What is SSC JHT?

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Hindi Translators Examination (JHT/CHT) for recruitment to various Hindi Translator and related translation posts in different Ministries, Departments and Organizations of the Government of India.

The examination assesses candidates mainly in General Hindi, General English, Translation and Essay writing. Depending on the post and the applicable SSC notification, candidates are required to meet prescribed educational qualifications and other eligibility conditions.

Junior Translation Officer

Hindi and English translation work in Central Government Ministries, Departments and Organizations, as applicable to the post.

Junior Translator

Translation of official documents and related language work between Hindi and English.

Junior Hindi Translator

Hindi translation and official language-related duties in the concerned Government organization.

04

Senior Hindi Translator

Senior-level Hindi translation and official language work, wherever the post is included in the applicable examination.

Eligibility

Requirement General Information
Educational Qualification MasterтАЩs degree from a recognized University in Hindi or English, with the prescribed Hindi/English subject or medium combination as specified by SSC.
Translation Qualification Recognized Diploma or Certificate course in translation from Hindi to English and vice versa, or the prescribed translation work experience, as applicable to the post.
Age 18 to 30 years as on 01-08-2026. Candidates must have been born not before 02-08-1996 and not later than 01-08-2008.
Age Relaxation Age relaxation is available to eligible categories such as SC/ST, OBC, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen as per Government rules and the SSC notification.
Nationality Candidate must satisfy the nationality/citizenship conditions prescribed by SSC, including applicable provisions for citizens of India and other eligible categories.

Paper-I is an Objective Type Computer Based Examination with 0.25 marks negative marking for each wrong answer. Paper-I has a sectional timer of 1 hour for each part. Paper-II is a Descriptive Paper consisting of Translation and Essay. Candidates eligible for use of a scribe are provided additional time as per SSC rules.

English Essay Structured essay writing in English on the given topic, including a clear introduction, relevant points, examples and a conclusion.
Translation Accuracy Maintain the original meaning and context of the passage while translating and avoid unnecessary literal translation.
Language & Grammar Focus on correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling, sentence formation and appropriate language usage in both Hindi and English.
Essay Structure Practise writing essays in a logical structure consisting of Introduction, Main Content and Conclusion.
Practice Practise previous year papers, translation passages and regular Hindi-English and English-Hindi writing.

Paper-II is a Descriptive Paper consisting of Translation and Essay. Candidates should practise both Hindi-to-English and English-to-Hindi translation along with essay writing in Hindi and English.

Paper-I carries 200 marks and Paper-II carries 200 marks. The total marks of the two written papers are 400. Paper-I has negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
