Combined Medical Services Examination (CMS) Guidance

What is CMS?

The Combined Medical Services Examination (CMS) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to various Central Government medical posts.

The examination is intended for medical graduates who meet the eligibility conditions prescribed in the latest UPSC CMS notification and the applicable rules.

Posts Generally Covered

Medical Officer

Medical officer posts under Central Government organisations/services as specified in the applicable notification.

Assistant Divisional Medical Officer

Medical officer posts associated with the railway medical services, subject to the vacancies notified.

General Duty Medical Officer

General duty medical posts in participating Central Government departments and organisations.

Eligibility

Requirement	General Information
Educational Qualification	Pass in the written and practical parts of the final MBBS examination, subject to the conditions specified in the latest notification.
Final Year Candidates	Candidates appearing in the final MBBS examination may be eligible subject to the conditions and deadlines specified by UPSC.
Age	The exact age limit and cut-off date are specified in the latest UPSC CMS notification.
Nationality	Nationality/citizenship conditions are specified in the applicable CMS rules.

Neurology	Neurological disorders, stroke, seizures and common neurological emergencies.
Nephrology	Renal diseases, electrolyte disorders and kidney-related emergencies.
Endocrinology	Diabetes, thyroid disorders and common endocrine diseases.
Infectious Diseases	Common infections, communicable diseases and important tropical diseases.
Pediatrics	Common childhood diseases, growth and development, nutrition and pediatric emergencies.

Paper II — Surgery

General Surgery	Principles of surgery, common surgical conditions and operative management.
Trauma	Shock, wounds, fractures, burns and emergency trauma management.
Orthopaedics	Common bone, joint and musculoskeletal conditions and injuries.
Urology	Common urinary tract disorders and urological emergencies.
Ophthalmology	Common eye diseases, injuries and basic emergency management.
ENT	Common ear, nose and throat disorders and their management.

Paper II — Gynaecology & Obstetrics

Biostatistics	Basic statistical methods, averages, dispersion and interpretation of health data.
Communicable Diseases	Important communicable diseases, prevention, control and national health programmes.

Maternal & Child Health	Maternal health, child health, immunisation, nutrition and related programmes.
Nutrition	Macronutrients, micronutrients, deficiency diseases and public-health nutrition.
Environmental Health	Water, sanitation, housing, air pollution and occupational/environmental health.
Health Administration	Health services, national health programmes, primary health care and health planning.

Written Examination

Written Qualification
